There have been many questions recently about whether or not Vitamin D can help treat sunburns, and whether or not taking this supplement can help reduce symptoms of sunburn. Most of these conversations center around a recent pilot study conducted by Dr. Lu and colleagues to determine whether or not Vitamin D can reduce the inflammation of the skin, caused by sunburn.
In order to understand what Vitamin D can do in terms of treating sunburns, Dr. Lu and his team took 20 participants and exposed them to some UV light to induce a small and controlled “sunburn” on their inner arm. After this, all participants were randomly divided into four groups:
Group 1: received a placebo pill
Group 2: received 50,000 IU of Vitamin D
Group 3: received 100,000 IU of Vitamin D
Group 4: received 200,000 IU of Vitamin D
After 24 hours, 48 hours, 72 hours, and 1 week, the team collected skin biopsies from each participant. All in all, in comparison to the subjects who took the placebo pill, those who received the Vitamin D dose experienced a reduction in skin inflammation.
Not only this, but the team unexpectedly found that Vitamin D did more than just reduce skin inflammation: it activated skin repair genes! What this report tells us is that the power of Vitamin D has been severely underestimated. New studies into just how this supplement can help other skin conditions, and maybe even prevent sunburn.
So, What Does It Mean?
Even with the breakthrough research, doctors do NOT recommend taking large doses of Vitamin D in hopes of treating sunburn. Dr. Lu states “I would not recommend at this moment that people start taking vitamin D after sunburn based on this study alone. But, the results are promising and worthy of further study.”
The final reporting of this study can be found in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, submitted by Dr. Lu, an assistant professor of dermatology at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, and his colleagues.
The bottom line: Vitamin D can help with the symptoms associated with sunburn, but it is not recommended to take action on your own just yet. If you would like, take the recommended dosage of the Vitamin D supplement, which is considered an essential nutrient. It not only aids bone health by promoting calcium absorption, but it also plays a role in nerve signaling and immune system functioning! And, you never know, maybe it will help your sunburn symptoms.
